5-Day Detection Dog Intensive

Program Overview

Many handlers make strong progress during the early stages of detection training. They attend seminars, workshops, and training days, build foundations, introduce odour, and begin developing their skills. Then comes the next question: "Where do I go from here?" Many people have done the hard work of getting started. The challenge is often knowing how to continue progressing, identifying the next step, and staying on track when you're doing most of the training on your own. Whether you're working through a training hurdle, looking to improve your handling skills, developing a young dog, or simply wanting a clearer direction for your training, this intensive is designed to help. Over five days we'll revisit the foundations of detection dog training, discuss common training hurdles, work a variety of dogs, train in different environments, and explore practical ways to continue progressing your training. Our objectives for the week are to: • Refresh the foundations of detection dog training • Work through common training hurdles and problem-solving strategies • Improve handling, search skills, and environmental exposure • Gain experience working different dogs and training scenarios • Develop a clear plan, goals, and next steps for your training • Build a record-keeping system that supports long-term development Participants will be encouraged to assess their current training, identify opportunities for improvement, and develop practical plans for continued progression. It's easy to leave a course, workshop, or training day with new ideas. The challenge is implementing those ideas and maintaining momentum once you return to your own training environment. This week is designed to help you gain fresh perspectives, better understand the dog in front of you, strengthen your decision-making, and leave with a clearer direction for your training moving forward.
